The Haṭha Yoga Project has played a significant role in changing the understanding of haṭha yoga. The project was initiated by James Mallinson and Mark Singleton in 2010, with the aim of exploring the history and practices of haṭha yoga. The project involved studying ancient texts and manuscripts, as well as observing and interviewing traditional practitioners of haṭha yoga.

As a result of the Haṭha Yoga Project, there has been a shift in the understanding of haṭha yoga. Previously, haṭha yoga was often seen as a purely physical practice, focused on the attainment of physical health and strength. However, the project has revealed that haṭha yoga has a rich history and philosophy, and is a holistic practice that encompasses physical, mental and spiritual aspects.

Furthermore, the Haṭha Yoga Project has led to a greater appreciation and understanding of the diversity of haṭha yoga practices. The project has highlighted the existence of numerous different lineages and styles of haṭha yoga, each with their own unique practices and philosophies. This has challenged the previously held notion that haṭha yoga is a uniform and standardized practice.

While it seems unlikely, the Haṭha Yoga Project nevertheless has had a significant impact on our understanding of haṭha yoga. It has revealed the rich history and philosophy of the practice and has highlighted the diversity of haṭha yoga practices. More than anything, many of priorities we’ve held as being fundamental to yoga practice are likely needing reconsideration when talking in terms of lineage and tradition
